This was a pretty light week with no new NBC shows, and a sitcom-free Monday night for CBS. Friday nights saw the premiere of Last Man Standing and the new series Malibu Country for a total of 13 shows. Overall this made for some pretty solid comedy across the board. So, I’ll get right into it…
#1 Apartment 23 – Season 2 Episode 2 – This might be the hardest I’ve laughed in a while, bravo Apartment 23! They pulled off an excellent Halloween episode with what I think is one of the most original and funny stories I’ve seen in a long time. There’s no way any show was going to come close this week. I won’t say any more, everyone should just go watch it.
#2 The Neighbors – Season 1 Episode 6 – This was another very funny episode. I really liked Larry Byrd joining Marty at his work. We got to see what Marty actually does for a living while seeing Larry in a new environment. However, a Halloween episode followed by a birthday episode makes me worried that they might only be finding inspiration in the holiday rituals. If the next episode is a Thanksgiving episode, well… But we’ll see, this episode still entertained the hell out of me to earn second place.
#3 Suburgatory – Season 2 Episode 3 – Jon Benjamin! And seriously what’s the deal with that pony eyelash-lined jacket? So weird. Lots of great jokes, great performances, and great setups for future episodes. Overall another solid episode, but not quite as good as last week’s Halloween stuff. My favorite line of this episode, from Ryan, “I know dude, you’re the best sister ever bro.”
#4 Ben and Kate – Season 1 Episode 6 – A lot of great moments in this episode. Tongue tied Kate was hilarious, closely matched by high Tommy. “Hey I’m gonna go see what’s up with that dog. Hey dog!” There were some good costume jokes too, which as you may know by know, I’m pretty picky with costume jokes.
#5 The Mindy Project – Season 1 Episode 4 – This episode gets a ton of point just for this line from a discussion about Breaking Bad, “If you’re obsessed with TV then why don’t you keep up in a timely manner?” The strange cat in Mindy’s apartment was great too. This show is very much growing on me, and it somewhat surprises me that this is only the fourth episode.
#6 Modern Family – Season 4 Episode 6 – I enjoyed this episodes but there wasn’t anything that stood out enough to boost it into my top 5 this week. Phil’s adventure was funny but I think Michael Scott’s similar adventure on the Office was a bit better. My favorite quote comes from Luke, “I know how to push buttons to get what I want, and what I want is to see a puppet show.” However, this is very similar to something he said in another recent episode where he was manipulating someone. Or maybe it was Manny… I’m not sure how I feel about that now.
#7 The Big Bang Theory – Season 6 Episode 6 – Finally an episode where I don’t feel terrible for Howard. I really liked Sheldon’s story this week, and Raj’s american accent was great, and Penny going back to school has some good potential beyond this episode. I’m looking forward to Sheldon finding out about it, and whatever might come of that. Seriously, we need a Sheldon and Penny episode as soon as possible.
#8 New Girl – Season 2 Episode 6 – I enjoyed this episode but can’t remember anything specific aside from Zombie Woody Allen and some face punching. That was pretty funny.
#9 Raising Hope – Season 3 Episode 5 – Burt falling in love with the gay bar is my favorite thing to happen on this show so far. Jimmy’s storyline was pretty good too but not nearly as memorable.
#10 Happy Endings – Season 3 Episode 2 – I liked this episode a lot more than the season premiere, there was a ton of great visual comedy. The only thing holding it back is my unfamiliarity with the characters and my lack of investment in them. That could change… Also, bonus points for Rob Corddry, Megan Mullally and making fun of the Hunger Games, Harry Potter and young adult fiction in general.
#11 Last Man Standing – Season 2 Episode 1 – I didn’t even realize that this was making it’s return this week, but I’m pretty glad, I forgot how much I like it. However, I didn’t care for all of the politics but I guess I give them props for basically being the only network sitcom I watch to talk about the election. Also, I’m not a fan of the actress replacement for Kristin. The rest of the family was a lot of fun to watch, and I enjoyed the fantasy football side story. I’m looking forward to next week’s episode which will hopefully be less topical and have a bit more Kyle and Ed.
#12 Guys With Kids – Season 1 Episode 7 – In a week of so few but excellent shows, Guys With Kids found itself here towards the bottom. I still enjoyed it though, particularly Gary’s spoon on a stick.
#13 Malibu Country – Season 1 Episode 1 – I don’t know what to say about this show except that it seems so outdated, more so than any other multi-camera show on the air. I never watched Reba (Reba’s previous sitcom), so I don’t know if there are a lot of similarities, but it feels like I’m watching that show. From wikipedia: “The show is set in Houston, Texas, and stars Reba McEntire as a wise cracking single mother Reba Nell Hart, whose dentist ex-husband Brock (Christopher Rich) has left her to marry young, ditzy Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman) after an affair with her, when it is revealed in the pilot episode that Barbra Jean is pregnant.” And the premise of the new show: “After finding that her husband has been cheating on her, Reba McKenzie and her family move from Nashville, Tennessee to Malibu, California, in an attempt to restart her music career and start a new chapter in their lives.” Yeah, that sounds like the exact same show. Lily Tomlin is great, however, and she should be on every show. I’ll keep watching to see if it improves.
That’s it for this week! I’m guessing that next week will be somewhat light as well due to that whole election thing. As we approach winter hiatus, check out my new podcast “Today I Watched…” where I take a couple of minutes to talk about movies, tv specials, and other stuff mostly found on Netflix Instant Watch.
