The 3rd Annual JKIRE Awards

Welcome to the 3rd Annual JKIRE Awards! It’s just like the Golden Globes except without a tv broadcast, interaction with the people receiving the awards, or any tangible manifestation of the reward. Check out last year’s awards, and the year before that!

Best New TV Series – Almost Human
This fall I haven’t been nearly as on top of television as I have in the last few years, but luckily I was turned on to this delightful sci-fi buddy cop show from some of the people who brought us the amazing Fringe. It’s funny, has tons of action, and Karl Urban is legend. Urban legend. Yep.
Runner-up – Orphan Black Holy cow this show is great. Actually I could swap these. They both win.
Co-Winner – Orphan Black!

Best Movie – Gravity
I can’t say enough how much I love this movie. That’s all.
Runner-up – Rush This took me by surprise. That’s not entirely true, I finally went to see it after it had been out for a while because I had heard it was great. I wanted to see for myself. It was great. I can’t wait to see and own both of these movies on Blu-ray.
Honorable Mention – We’re the Millers I also didn’t expect this to be as good as it was. I unfortunately didn’t see it in theaters, but I feel like it delighted me more than the other excellent comedies I saw this year This is the End, The Heat and Bad Grandpa.

Best Podcast – Mysterious Universe
I’m a proud MU Plus subscriber, how can this not be my favorite podcast? A new podcast I started listening to this year that’s worth checking out is The Star Wars Minute. I’ll also shout out to Doug Loves Movies and Doug Loves Minis since I was present for the Benson Interruption of Lethal Weapon!

Best Sci-Fi TV Show – Almost Human
Of course.
Runner-up – Orphan Black Damn it this problem again….
Co-Winner – Orphan Black!

Best Non-Sci-Fi Show – Breaking Bad
Do I even need to explain this?

Best Non-Sci-Fi non-AMC Show – Justified
Yet again. Last season was fantastic as always, and the new season starts TONIGHT! Yes!

Best Animated Film – Did Wreck-It Ralph come out in 2013? I guess that. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Part 3 was pretty good but totally insane. Eh, why did I even carry over this category…

Best Sci-Fi Film – Thor The Dark World
This is my favorite Marvel film so far and the action sequences were fantastic. If the new Star Wars comes close with it’s dogfights and lightsaber battles I will be happy.
Runner-up – Star Trek Into Darkness I just realized that I did see this in theaters and didn’t include it in my list of movies I saw in 2013. If you consider Gravity a sci-fi film then obviously it wins this category, but it doesn’t contain anything that doesn’t exist in the real world so I just see it as fiction.

Best Reality Competition Show – Survivor
Of course. No runner-up this year because I have only seen the first few episodes of Amazing Race’s spring season, and haven’t watched any of the fall season.

Best Actor – Bryan Cranston
Obviously.

Best Actress – Tatiana Maslany
Wow. What she pulls off on Orphan Black… Wow. Also she was on Parks and Rec. That’s an automatic ten point boost.

Best New TV Comedy – Brooklyn Nine-Nine
If you haven’t seen this yet CHECK IT OUT. I hope this show lasts a long, long time. It has all the greatness of Parks and Rec without any of Office-y stuff (the documentary style).

Best TV Comedy – Parks and Recreation
You should always see this coming.

Best Animated TV Show – Bob’s Burgers
This is the only animated show I watched this year so I had to choose it, but I’m sure I would choose it anyway! No runner-up because I have yet to watch the latest season of Archer.

That concludes the 3rd Annual JKIRE Awards! If you have other categories you’d like me to weigh in on please leave a comment and I will add it!

The 1st Annual JKIRE Awards!

Welcome to the 1st Annual JKIRE Awards! They’re just like the Golden Globes except the winners are only chosen by one person. And there isn’t a statuette for the winners. This is for television, movies and other media that came out in 2011.

Best New TV Series – Shameless
I didn’t even see this one coming, and it blew me away.

Best Movie – Hanna
The movie itself is amazing, and the music puts it over the top. Note, I only saw maybe 10 movies in the theater this year, so there’s a good chance if you comment “But what about ____?” I didn’t even see it.

Best Podcast – How Did This Get Made?
I didn’t start listening to Improv4Humans until after the new year, so I have to give this one to Paul Scheer and friends. I pretty much listened to every episode back to back on my trip to Chicago, and it’s the primary reason I saw the Crank movies, which are so awesome.

Best TV Show Based Around Something I’m Not at All Interested In – The League
I don’t care about football outside of its widespread popularity means the existence of nice stadiums all over the country for drum corps to rehearse and perform on. I care even less about fantasy football. And yet, I love The League. Maybe I have the earwolf network to blame, as my addiction to that ‘family’ of comedians has conditioned me perfectly to enjoy The League.

Best Sci-Fi TV Show – Fringe
Of course.

Best non-Sci-Fi TV Show – Breaking Bad
Hands down. Faces off.

Best non-Sci-Fi TV Show that isn’t on AMC – Justified
This only loses to Breaking Bad because last year was only the second season, so I don’t have as big of an attachment to the characters yet… Then again I’ve been watching since premiere night, and came late to Breaking Bad. Hmm…

Best Animated Film – …
I didn’t see any animated films this year. I really want to see Tintin though.

Best Sci-Fi Film – Thor
I love ancient alien stuff, and Thor is all about that. Captain American was about another favorite topic, Nazi Pseudoscience Research, so that was pretty great too.

Best Documentary TV Show – Ancient Aliens
See Best Sci-Fi Film. I love this stuff!

Best Reality Competition Show – Top Shot
Shooting challenges, and throwing rocks. Doesn’t get better than that, show that actually tests people’s real skills! Not just balancing on things while holding other things, and stuff like that. It helps that they use exploding targets a large percentage of the time.

Best Actor – Bryan Cranston
Crazy good. Crazy, crazy good.

Best Actress – Kaitlyn Dever
Awesome on Justified, very funny in Last Man Standing, and she was probably the best thing about Bad Teacher. I would give this to Saoirse Ronan, but she was only in one movie. They’re both amazing for how young they are, I am really looking forward to seeing more of their work over the years, and I am 100% sure that neither of them will end up being out of control divas.

Best New TV Comedy – Wilfred
I heard about this show from my friend Ben when we were chatting at the Stanford DCI show this summer. He made it sound great (from what he knew about it from commercials) so I got a hold of a copy for us to watch as soon as possible. We were hooked. Perfect companion for…

Best TV Comedy – Louie
So. Damn. Hilarious. I can’t get enough. It’s easy to forget since it was on during the summer, and there were only a handful of episode (I was about to give this award to Community, which really is equally as deserving). This show and Community are the only sitcoms I plan on owning every season on DVD/Bluray. And so far, so good.

Best Animated TV Show – Archer
FX is solid all around, basically. The bonus three pirate episodes at the end of the summer were fantastic. I’m really glad it’s back as of last Thursday, and is as strong as ever. Regular Show and Adventure Time are tied for a somewhat close second place.

Best Comedy Actors – Jon Benjamin and Patrick Warburton
Archer, Bob’s Burgers, Jon Benjamin Has A Van. Archer, Family Guy, Rules of Engagement, Skylanders. The sheer amount of awesome these two guys put out is astounding and I can’t get enough. Now that I think of it… Throw in Nick Kroll and Paul Scheer. Four way tie!

And that concludes the 1st Annual JKIRE Awards! If you have any suggestions for other categories, please leave a comment and I’ll add it to the list!

Alcatraz – Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot’

I’m breaking up premiere night into two posts, one for each episode (it’s not a full on two parter like Lost and Fringe were) so look out for Episode 2 later tonight or tomorrow.

I’ve been looking forward to this show ever since I heard some of the first rumors that basically consisted of the words “Alcatraz” “JJ Abrams” “Jorge Garcia” and “Sam Neill”. That’s enough to get me excited, and so far it’s delivering!

More after the break, spoilers ahead (how spoiled can you get on the Pilot of a show anyway?)

Fringe – Season 4 Episode 8 ‘Back to Where You’ve Never Been’

Welcome to my first Fringe episode review here on my site. Here’s how these are going to work: no summaries of the plot, you can go watch the episode for that or look at one of those wiki things. I’ll just get straight to the parts i thought were awesome, what parts were confusing, what was really funny etc. That being said, spoilers ahead, here we go…

Fringe

I love Fringe, it’s a fantastic show and everyone should watch it.

I waited until this morning to watch episodes 6 and 7 of the current season, I feel like a terrible fan. But I am going to make it a point to watch every new episode within 6 hours of airing (sometimes there’s an event at work so I can’t watch it as it airs) so that I can post my thoughts about each episode right here!

Also, if you’re not a Nielsen’s household, I urge you to do one of the following:

Free: Watch past episodes on Fringe as much as possible on hulu.com/fringe and fox.com/fringe even if it’s just on in the background while you’re doing other stuff.

Not Free: Get a season pass on itunes or amazon. (I prefer amazon because it only charges you as each episode becomes available, as opposed to paying for the whole season all at once)

Of course, also buy up those past seasons!

Alright that’s all for now, see you tomorrow with more Fringe talk!
