Movies I Saw in 2012

The following is a list of movies I saw in the theater in 2012. I had a list of movies I wanted to see in the theater, but I fulfilled my goal quite poorly. Luckily all of the movies I did see were totally worth it.

21 Jump Street – Hilarious. Just hilarious. Even if you didn’t watch the original series, this is definitely worth seeing. (Saw this with my mom)

The Avengers – Instantly became my favorite super hero movie. Still is. Very funny, and brought the characters together for a fun adventure. Yeah, the getting them together part was drawn out a bit too much, and having the Hulk trapped inside a flying fortress wasn’t the best idea on anyone’s part, but I had a lot of fun every time I saw it, damn it! (Saw this with my mom in 2D, and by myself in 3D)

The Dark Knight Rises – A great conclusion to a fine trilogy. I liked it more than the previous two films, and the last 5 minutes or so really sold it for me. I didn’t like it quite as much as the Avengers though. (Saw this with Kirbie)

Argo – I loved this movie, my favorite of the year. Of all time even. Yes, even better than the Avengers! Everyone who loves films should see it. (Saw this with Kirbie)

Skyfall – This movie wasn’t even really on my radar until the video for Adele’s theme song popped up. That sold me on it, and I’m glad I went to see it because it’s the most entertained I’ve been by a James Bond film yet. I’m not a superfan or anything, but the references to the franchise’s history I did get made me all giddy. (Saw this with my brother-in-law)

Life of Pi – I tried reading the book years ago, but lost interest. I kind of knew the plot and stuff because my mom loved the book and told me what she thought were the most important parts. Obviously she wanted to go see the movie, so I went with her. I thought at the very least it will be interesting. Turned out to be amazing. It was a bit on the long side, but once I got past the first half hour I was totally on board. (Saw this with my mom)

My goal was to see at least 6 movies, so I guess I did barely succeed. I saw a ton of 2012’s releases on DVD such as That’s My Boy, People Like Us, Premium Rush, The Cabin in the Woods and more. The movie I most wanted to see was Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Apart but there’s still time for that since it’s only been out a couple weeks!

I guess I’ll keep my goal for this year conservative, so stay tuned for a list of the movies I want to see in 2013!

2012 Highlights

2012 is almost over so what will I remember most about this year?

  • I launched jkire.com – otherwise you’d be reading this list on tumblr or something!
  • Kirbie just reminded me that she was here in Denver for New Year’s Eve last year, unfortunately that couldn’t happen again this year, but I spent a week in Portland with her earlier this month. Hopefully in 2013 we will be able to spend more time together!
  • #15! Blue Devils’ show Cabaret Voltaire was awesome and I’m proud to have been a part of the organization for my 9th season!
  • I got to accompany the corps to Guatemala over Labor Day weekend. My only disappointment is how close we were to Mayan ruins on our night off in Antigua, but there was no easy way to get there. Next time. The cooler ruins are further North anyway.
  • Custom vinyl toys. I started making these last fall but didn’t really make a lot of them until this year. They’re a lot of fun to make and everyone who has ordered some seems to like them!
  • Marching Lessons! I started it in 2011 but the episodes progressed into 2012. I still haven’t gotten around to making the “Practical Exam” yet, but… hey, I’ll get to it eventually!

Looking back there are a few things I intended to make happen in 2012 that just haven’t for one reason or another. I could be disappointed about it but instead I’m going to use those unfinished projects as a foundation to make sure 2013’s highlights are ten times as great. Here are just a handful of the projects I want to finish in the next 12 months:

  • The 2012 Pit Documentary!
  • PSW – A sci-fi novel.
  • The Marching Lessons Practical Exam
  • Zom Nomz – A comic.
  • Fridge – More of the comic. Figured I would wait for Fringe to end.
  • Eriktronic – A music album.
  • A detective novel.
  • Relaunch “Today I Watched” as a video series.
  • A couple of children’s books I’ve been putting off.

Maybe there’s something on this list you’d like to see more than the others? Let me know! The biggest obstacle has been having to decide between them all, so I usually end up playing video games instead.

Of course I plan on doing what I can to make sure the “bigger than me” stuff like drum corps is as great as possible too. And to take even better photos than the last two years.

Happy New Year! I have a pretty good feeling about 2013.
