Best TV Series and Best New TV Series – True Detective
Incredibly well made in every way, it must be seen by anyone interested in the crime/mystery genre.

The best made film of the year overall, however my favorite film of the year is The Gambler.

Still my favorite, I’ve been an MU+ subscriber all year.

Incredible job in Birdman, and one of the best things about RoboCop

I enjoyed every film I saw her in this year.

Best Animated TV Show – Bob’s Burgers

The 3rd Annual JKIRE Awards

Welcome to the 3rd Annual JKIRE Awards! It’s just like the Golden Globes except without a tv broadcast, interaction with the people receiving the awards, or any tangible manifestation of the reward. Check out last year’s awards, and the year before that!

Best New TV Series – Almost Human
This fall I haven’t been nearly as on top of television as I have in the last few years, but luckily I was turned on to this delightful sci-fi buddy cop show from some of the people who brought us the amazing Fringe. It’s funny, has tons of action, and Karl Urban is legend. Urban legend. Yep.
Runner-up – Orphan Black Holy cow this show is great. Actually I could swap these. They both win.
Co-Winner – Orphan Black!

Best Movie – Gravity
I can’t say enough how much I love this movie. That’s all.
Runner-up – Rush This took me by surprise. That’s not entirely true, I finally went to see it after it had been out for a while because I had heard it was great. I wanted to see for myself. It was great. I can’t wait to see and own both of these movies on Blu-ray.
Honorable Mention – We’re the Millers I also didn’t expect this to be as good as it was. I unfortunately didn’t see it in theaters, but I feel like it delighted me more than the other excellent comedies I saw this year This is the End, The Heat and Bad Grandpa.

Best Podcast – Mysterious Universe
I’m a proud MU Plus subscriber, how can this not be my favorite podcast? A new podcast I started listening to this year that’s worth checking out is The Star Wars Minute. I’ll also shout out to Doug Loves Movies and Doug Loves Minis since I was present for the Benson Interruption of Lethal Weapon!

Best Sci-Fi TV Show – Almost Human
Of course.
Runner-up – Orphan Black Damn it this problem again….
Co-Winner – Orphan Black!

Best Non-Sci-Fi Show – Breaking Bad
Do I even need to explain this?

Best Non-Sci-Fi non-AMC Show – Justified
Yet again. Last season was fantastic as always, and the new season starts TONIGHT! Yes!

Best Animated Film – Did Wreck-It Ralph come out in 2013? I guess that. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Part 3 was pretty good but totally insane. Eh, why did I even carry over this category…

Best Sci-Fi Film – Thor The Dark World
This is my favorite Marvel film so far and the action sequences were fantastic. If the new Star Wars comes close with it’s dogfights and lightsaber battles I will be happy.
Runner-up – Star Trek Into Darkness I just realized that I did see this in theaters and didn’t include it in my list of movies I saw in 2013. If you consider Gravity a sci-fi film then obviously it wins this category, but it doesn’t contain anything that doesn’t exist in the real world so I just see it as fiction.

Best Reality Competition Show – Survivor
Of course. No runner-up this year because I have only seen the first few episodes of Amazing Race’s spring season, and haven’t watched any of the fall season.

Best Actor – Bryan Cranston
Obviously.

Best Actress – Tatiana Maslany
Wow. What she pulls off on Orphan Black… Wow. Also she was on Parks and Rec. That’s an automatic ten point boost.

Best New TV Comedy – Brooklyn Nine-Nine
If you haven’t seen this yet CHECK IT OUT. I hope this show lasts a long, long time. It has all the greatness of Parks and Rec without any of Office-y stuff (the documentary style).

Best TV Comedy – Parks and Recreation
You should always see this coming.

Best Animated TV Show – Bob’s Burgers
This is the only animated show I watched this year so I had to choose it, but I’m sure I would choose it anyway! No runner-up because I have yet to watch the latest season of Archer.

That concludes the 3rd Annual JKIRE Awards! If you have other categories you’d like me to weigh in on please leave a comment and I will add it!

Network Sitcom Power Rankings – Fall 2012

This week the first round of new episodes made their way to the air. I watched The Big Bang Theory, Guys with Kids and Last Man Standing, the only shows haven’t been eliminated. I enjoyed them for different reasons. The Big Bang Theory felt like the good old show again. I missed the very first scene though, so I feel like I might have missed the better Leonard stuff. Guys With Kids was fun to see the flashback versions of the characters. Last Man Standing wasn’t quite as good as usual. That’s more or less that order I would put them in.

That said, I think I will end my network sitcom power rankings since a full half season is a pretty good indicator of what I thought of these shows. Keep on reading for the final results (not counting this week’s episodes):

Network Sitcom Power Rankings – Week of December 17, 2012

This week was a relief, just a few excellent new episodes to watch.

#1 Apartment 23 – Season 2 Episode 7 – I still love this show. I won’t even mention my favorite parts because it was all awesome. Okay, I’ll mention tongue doors. But that’s it. Go watch it!

#2 Happy Endings – Season 3 Episode 5 – I really enjoyed this episode and I want some egg nog. Yet, I forgot to get egg nog the three times I went to the grocery store since watching it. Damn it! “Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park, Newman gets killed real bad!” Best alternate lyrics to jingle bells ever.

#3 How I Met Your Mother – Season 8 Episode 11 and 12 – Wow, these two episodes have made the rest of this season worth it. In episode 11 we had the classic silliness with Barney being jinxed the entire episode, which led into the set up for episode 12 which turned around a lot of the stuff that was just annoying me lately. Unfortunately, I do have to eliminate one show this week and I can’t eliminate 1600 Penn since there has only been one episode. I will keep watching though, especially if they keep up the same quality as these two episodes.

#4 1600 Penn – Season 1 Episode 1 – This show has some promise. I don’t think it’s as good as the canceled Animal Practice. I’ll give it a chance though. It’s cool to see Bill Pullman as president again.

And here are the running totals:

(Show Name – Total – Avg)
Apartment 23 – 9 – 1.29
Parks and Recreation – 13 – 1.44
Go On – 27 – 2.45

Network Sitcom Power Rankings – Week of December 10, 2012

The new episodes begin to dwindle and give some shows a chance to improve their average ranking. More Christmas stuff. Not quite tired of it yet… but there are still a few Christmas episodes left for next week. Alright, here we go!

#1 Apartment 23 – Season 2 Episode 6 – Damn it this show is great. Even if this episode only consisted of James’ dance routine I would have ranked this first this week. I kind of want to watch Dancing with the Stars now, too. My favorite part was the look of horror on Chloe’s face when the little boy started walking towards her.

#2 Modern Family – Season 4 Episode 10 – A very good episode, I liked pretty much everything about it. We didn’t see Haley or Alex but I didn’t really miss them. I also prefer Gloria’s terrible singing over Ava’s singing on Up All Night.

#3 The Big Bang Theory – Season 6 Episode 11 – The highlights for me were Sheldon singing and Raj going out with the girls. I was also happy that Stuart is finally back.

#4 Last Man Standing – Season 2 Episode 7 – Ed’s Eagle storyline was silly, which I enjoyed. Mike’s “kidnapping the dog” plan ended up being a pretty cool way to bring the episode to a close. Overall, very good.

#5 The Neighbors – Season 1 Episode 10 – Finally a non-holiday episode! Instead we got a funeral. Still, it was nice a change of pace and it was pretty entertaining.

#6 The Mindy Project – Season 1 Episode 9 – Danny’s gingerbread house with cotton candy insulation is my favorite holiday thing this season. He and Mindy need to just get together already, come on now. Pretty good episode.

#7 New Girl – Season 2 Episode 11 – Christmas parties. Uh… Oh yeah, my favorite joke was after Sam talked to the room they were hiding in he says he’s done the same speech in three rooms already. It’s a lot funnier than it sounds. Yeah alright, anyway…

#8 The Middle – Season 4 Episode 10 – Axl and Brick’s story was pretty good this week, and I enjoyed the whole anniversary story as well.  I’m watching the episode of Love Bites where James Roday has a foot fetish as I write this so I’m getting really distracted by the weirdness of that. By the way, I really like this show, they’re a bunch of separate stories that get intertwined in interesting ways. Sounds kind of familiar

#9 Up All Night – Season 2 Episode 10 and 11 – I liked the trip to big bear more than the wedding flashback. They were both pretty good. I just found out that after this the show will switch to multi-cam with a live audience. That is going to be very, very weird.

#10 How I Met Your Mother – Season 8 Episode 10 – This episode was silly which was great. The show is getting more and more like the good old How I Met Your Mother I enjoy so much. I’m actually writing this after I’ve already seen the next two episodes, so I won’t say any more.

#11 Happy Endings – Season 3 Episode 6 – This wasn’t as memorable as the last couple episodes. I mostly just remember Jane going “full Gallagher.” And Tommy Jefferson. And Kulap. Anyway, don’t worry about the low ranking because it’s still safe this week!

#12 Whitney – Season 2 Episode 4 – I enjoyed this episode but I have to eliminate it. Not as good as everything else this week and in past weeks. Just like last week it felt like way too much A story. I’ll keep watching it though.

So that’s it for this week! With Whitney eliminated I’m down to just 16 shows remaining from this fall. They’re going to keep on dropping though, because there are a handful of shows that start in January and February.
