Back in November I started developing a board game based on drum corps called Drum Corps Battle. I made a football field game board, a bunch of tiles to use as game pieces, and even played a test game with a group of friends.
Shortly after the test session, the game went on the backburner. I think it has potential, but I just haven’t had much time and I don’t know if there is much pay off for taking it to completion. I haven’t sunken much time or money into it so far, and it’s fairly close to being done, so what’s the problem?
I’m not sure what to do with it once it’s complete. Do I make copies of the board game to sell? Do I sell an e-book describing the rules and instructions on how to build your game board and pieces? Or do I just give that ebook away for free?
The rules can easily be applied to any other theme… not just marching band, winter guard, etc. but the Civil War, space battle, soccer. So maybe what I distribute is the basic rules, and a series of sections describing how you can play it in the world you want to play it. Kind of like those weird knockoff fan-fic novels that have generic character names and places that get replaced with a franchise’s terminology [a quick search reveals this is called a 'dehydrated book'], people who want to use my instructions can make their version about whatever they want.
Perhaps I will go both routes, distribute an e-book with full instructions as well as offer the services of creating a custom game made to order. We’ll see. I probably won’t get around to this whole thing until closer to the summer, or even next fall, but be on the look out for Drum Corps Battle! (or whatever I end up calling it)
